Kansas City Seminar
The seminar was held at the school of Sensei Albert Mercado in Kansas City. It was a two day seminar consisting of two parts.
One part was taught by Sensei Box, and the other by Sensei Meier. Sensei Box taught his kicking seminar to teach proper kicking, and kicking from difficult positions. It is a very hard practice, and very demanding.
One would never know that Sensei Box was at such an advanced age being able to do all the exercises himself. The second seminar was taught by Sensei Meier. The subject was “ma” and”ma-ai”. (or distance, and distancing) The technique usedwas age-zuki (rising punch). The participants learned to deliver age-zukiwith oi-zuki, kizami-zuki, and gyaka-zuki, as well as inadzuma-zuki (jumping in). Mr. A.J. Mercado, the assistant instructor for the class there in Kansas City was able to deliver age-zuki in a flash from fifteen feet away using inadzuma-zuki. Others demonstrated lesser distance with ma-ai.
We worked hard on the basic punching techniques, tactics, and strategies for about two hours each day.
On the last day, in the last half hour, the black belts were taught the strategy of how to use age-zuki defensively combining it with the mind-set of sen-no-sen using ibuki (breath)as the indicator for the timing of the technique.
Much was learned in both seminars. Afterwards, we were treated to an excellent meal at a fine Japanese restaurant.
