– Assembly and salutation
– Board Breaking
The purpose of board breaking is to demonstrate to all in observance that the techniques being used are effective, powerful, destructive, but controlled. In the hand to hand engagements to follow, the combatants will be using control and precision in lieu of hand and body padding. Padding only inhibits the speed of maneuverability, as well as doing and inadequate job of protecting it’s wearer.
– Kumite
The decision of the referee will be unquestioned.
In round robin kumite there will be a head referee. He will be assisted by one assistant, to which he may solicit an opinion.
After several engagements, the head referee will retire, the assistant referee will rotate to the head referee position, and a new assistant referee will be assigned.
In five-on-one kumite there will be a head referee who is in charge of the entire exercises, as well as a referee for each individual attacker.
When the referee for an attacker sees his participant receive a scoring point, he will immediately call him out of the engagement.
When the head referee sees the defender receive a scoring point, he will immediately pause the engagement. If it is the first wazari scored on the defender, the engagement will continue until the defender has suffered two wazari’s or all of the attackers have been defeated.
At the command “hajime” the engagement will begin
At the command “yame” or “nakaye” the combatants will immediately cease.
Only respect for the referees and senseis will be tolerated
Bad attitude or excessive contact from any participant will result in his dismissal from further exercises.
The participants will rotate through this exercise as the defender two times.
We discourage intentionally using throws or foot sweeps due to injury, but one half point will be awarded for a successful non injury throw or foot sweep or take down.
No winner or loser will be proclaimed, only the end of the engagement.
Ippon Kowashi No-waza (one point strike) rules will be used.
Contact
A fully developed and focused technique, controlled by distance, from two inches away from the target to skin contact will be considered
Any contact deeper than skin contact will result in disqualification
One point for a fully developed, well focused, precision strike, punch, or kick to a vital point, on a stationary, or advancing target
One half point for a technique of less precision, or on a non-vital target (leg, groin etc) that may be advancing, retreating, or stationary
No score for an underdeveloped, less powerful, out of range, or excessive contact technique.
Any contact to the groin will result in no point.
Round Robin Kumite
Each participant will face all of the other participants one by one.
Self-defense rules will be observed.
The defender needs only to score one half point to end the encounter; however, the attacker must score one full point or two half points to end the encounter.
The Defender
The Defender will face all participants one at a time
The defender is not limited to only defense. He may attack the attacker at any time.
The Defender needs only to score one half point on the attacker to end the encounter
The Attacker.
It is the job of the attacker to carry the fight to the defender
The attacker must score a full point on the defender, or two half points
The attacker may use any attack he may desire
One of the attackers will have a weapon. A shinai, training gun, training knife,
Comments:
Self-defense karate assumes that the defender would escape the encounter if he coould. For this reason, he only needs to momentarily disable the attacker to make good his escape. On the other hand, it is assumed that the attacker is determined to do great injury to the defender. For this reason, he must score a A killing blow, or one full point, or two half points to commit his deed.
It is assumed that if the defender is taken to the ground, that he will soon be finised off by other attackers, even though as yet, he has not been dispatched.
Since the common element of ambush is not a factor in any exercise, the attackers will be using a fighting stance that will increase their ability to launch a speedier attack. To some degree, this stance will offset the element of surprise.
